Summer Planning for Parents
The last time we dealt with kids and activities for the summer. Reading is essential for children, and summer is the prime time to build those skills.
I found some pages at About.com for parents who want to work closely with children to teach them other valuable skills or just to spend quality time with them. Not everything will obviously be your cup of tea, but you may find some new ideas here. Some things may create ways for you to implement other ideas as well.
These pages focus on the use of the computer with children.
http://childparenting.about.com/od/kidswebsites/ss/kidcomputerplan.htm
The plan calls for eight weeks. Tailor it according to your needs.
As usual, I wish everyone a happy summer!

Summer Activities
Sometimes, a good activity can also help you to practice valuable skills
or pass them along to your younger brothers and sisters. Parents, of course, should assist, if time permits. :)
Reading is a fun thing for everyone to participate in as a collective group.
You can delegate different people to help with each area.
I ask the cats sometimes to listen to something I play on the piano
or if I read something that concerns them. They always listen and say meow. They give great feedback.
Now, if there are people involved, you get amazing feedback and cooperation!!!!!!
Here's a site with wonderful and fun activities to try out this summer.
http://www.education.com/activity/reading/
Reading is not only engaging. It heightens your awareness to new and exciting things.
I hope this summer is spectacular for all of you at home.

Kids As Future Consumers
If this topic interests you, you might want to contact the right experts.
There are a few online.
Heidi Stevens, in a newspaper article recently (for Tribune Newspapers 5/30/10)
recommends the following sites.
www.admongo.gov
She focuses on media and consumerism in the article and that literacy is needed
for the children to understand that ads are seeking a response from them. This is also going to be more important to them as they are the future consumers in our society.
If you would like to find information on the article, contact Heidi at

Glass, in some cases, is at times a lost industry. Glass was the ruling
dynamic in an age that has long passed us by. Over time, it was replaced
by steel and even plastic.
There are some such as the child above that resurrect it every once in a while.
Research on the glass - making industry and see what you can find.

Google Updates: Technology and Research
Schools have links and sites for outside communities in order to share resources
with the community at large. This is for people who are interested in the aspects of research, or if they want to stay in touch with their school during the summer season. I still visit my old school sites as well for nostalgic reasons.
(Not always!...but whenever, I am bored with News Letters...lol)
I am interested in educational links in general, because that is within my area of expertise. If you want entertainment/games or do not care for subject matter of this sort, please just bypass this post altogether.
If you like research and a view of the educational realm around you, you will love this site. It's also refreshing to explore areas to which you may not normally visit.
Below is a link that connects students and others to features of Google Search.
It matters what a community provides as an outreach to all different peoples of all ages and stages. From time to time, I will provide resources from other sites that you can investigate.
Thanks!

New Site / Old Site
Happy Mother's Day to your Moms/Family!
Some of you know of this site.
Some of you don't.
What about this PBS site below?
Why do you know about it?
What about a child who has never been on the internet?
http://pbskids.org/findit
Have you wondered why some people know something?
...and others don't?
For example, did you know how to cook when you were a baby?
How about now?
Why does your mom know how to cook, for example, and you don't?
Every one is given a life span for learning new things.
Most of the time, everyone learns something at a different point in time and
at a different age.
I know friends who know things before I do. Then again, I know a lot of things
they don't. So what happens when you all get together in the same room?
What about in a classroom? Am I going to tell you one thing and another child another thing?
Most of the time, teachers talk to the whole class. Some people are listening, and some are not listening. Some read better. Some are better at math than others. Teachers have to find creative ways to make sure each child is on the same page.
By the end of the school year, everyone has to know about the same amount of information.
What are you doing to make sure learning happens?
Are you the one who disrupts the class and keeps everyone from learning?
Are you a team player and makes sure everyone is learning?
When a new child comes to your school, are you the one who helps them, or
holds them back? If they are immigrants, do you help to make them feel at home?
Do you, instead, make fun of them for their differences?
Point to Ponder: Think about it!
Did you know that most of the time, our parents all came to America from a different place? Ask your grandparents or great grandparents. They might have wonderful stories about coming here. They might also tell you that they had rough times at first.
Conduct a family interview with the whole family.
A family's research project!
Everyone sits with the person and asks one
question each. Make sure you keep your questions as a surprise from the others.
It'll be fun to hear everyone's questions. If someone may have the same question as
you, you can always have a back - up question ready.
Team Skills in Class:
How do you do this?
Work as a team?
Is it through behavior?
Role - modeling?
Is it in peer tutoring / helping a friend learn something
he or she missed in class?
When I was growing up, I had the good fortune to meet best friends who
helped me to learn. Then later, I met students who would steal my books and hide them. Sometimes, you meet people who make trouble for someone, or someone makes
trouble for you. Others steal from your backpack.
The classroom is a place where a lot of life's problems happen. They are the
same problems that happen when you grow older and graduate from school.
You will meet people who know things and others who don't. You have to work
with them in the same setting, or the same company. Some of them might help
you. Some will steal your ideas. Some are bullies. It is a rough terrain.
Seek advice now when you run into a problem. Go to a teacher or a trusted adult if
something happens while you are in school. Go to a parent.
That's why there are people or things that are set in place. They are like
markers on our journey toward success. If you learn from the best along the way,
you are most likely to be the ones that others will seek when problems arise.
Don't forget to be best friends, enjoy your school days, listen to your teachers,
and to your moms, too. They mean well when it comes to what you know and what
you do not.
Be happy that you don't always know everything.
There's always room to know more, later.
Enjoy your weekend!
~Ms. A.

Working With Parents...
Working at home after school can be a challenge. Every family has a challenge.
A lot of kids value independence in handling projects. There are other
kids who may need help from parents at home. The only way you will
know how your family can connect is by communicating, not only about
school but about life.
Friends of mine would have problems the next day at school, because
their parents did all their projects for them. I would sometimes need
help, and no one would be home to answer questions. So, how would you
handle this in your own case? If there isn't a friend available, or a
website or even a tutor available, I would sit down with your parents
and ask what is the best possible situation at your home.
A teacher can also help to resolve the situation if you ask him or her.
You can say I am not getting my work done, because of these issues.
You can probably figure out what is the best route to take when faced
with a problem simply by communicating. It is always the best option.
You can also resolve things creatively when none of the above options
work. Where there's a will, there's a way. Every kid has a powerful
mind and knowledge from which he or she can pull. Believe in yourself!

Children's Page!
I remember when officers would visit schools when I was younger.
They were personable, and they always brought something for
the whole class. I thought it was interesting to listen to them and learn
how they performed their jobs in life. I couldn't wait until they came
back the next year.
Here is a children's page for kids of all ages from one such agency.
We never had this when we were younger, so this is an alternative to school visits.

Travel Blogs!
When I was younger, I used to carry a little notebook around and take notes about
class field trips. I wanted to keep those memories with me and rewrite them.
I wish I had done more of this kind of thing, because it would have been
meaningful to me. We had only traveled to Normal, but it was a big deal to me.
So this is a great idea for your family or you to pursue.
Record your travel experiences!
Face it! As we age, family-time decreases, because people move away, or
get too involved with work and business pursuits. So the best way to
capture some of these moments is to jot down your fun times or not
so fun times.
A camera or a laptop or other such item would also aid in this project.
A tape recorder or videotape recorder may be inconvenient to carry, but
would be helpful as well.
I found a travel blog example for you to view.

After School Help?
Tutoring is a great way to make headway in any given field. Whether you are struggling with Math or English, a tutor encourages you to learn according to your pace and helps to build valuable skills. There are centers that teach individuals and groups. Tutors also work with students individually. Ask your school or teacher to recommend tutors to you if you need extra help once in a while.
I found out about this site while attending Loyola University in Chicago. They use television as a means to teach children. See if this one appeals to you. Ask a parent or other adult to guide you in navigating the site.
Enjoy!

Also, provide feedback either here to me or to the university itself. There is always room for suggestions and improvement. This valuable interaction is greater than any other investment in today's hectic culture.

Tired of the Internet Yet?
Just kidding!
Although the internet is a powerful resource for both kids and adults alike, you really do need to take a break once in a while.
This is the weekend. A great time for all children to connect with family! This is the prime time to talk about the past week and get feedback from your siblings or parents.
If you can't get them to talk about anything, start a family newsletter online, and tell everyone you need their participation to add information. Then you can also view it as well as send it to family and friends around the states (the world?).
Check with your parents about listing personal schedules and times, in case thieves are also reading.
A written out version like a family journal can also be helpful to communicate with one another during the week. Work at it, make it like a scrapbook together, cut out magazine photos (as long as you use the right ones), and color. You will love this family project!
A weekend scavenger hunt inside the house might also be fun. One can be the organizer and hide the items, and the rest scout for hidden treasures.
If your family likes table tennis or pool, you can buy equipment for that also.
Have you tried keeping observational notes from your back yard or porch? Watch or feed birds. Watch squirrels. Write about their behavior and become an expert in your science class.
I loved the outdoors as a child. Snap photos and add it to your journals or newsletters, and scrapbooks.
Any activity that keeps you working together and talking is a nice break away from the internet.
So, enjoy the weekend, play, sit down and talk, or have a Movie Night! Your dad can get the popcorn, unless your mom wants to, and play some favorites. Order a pizza or whatever your family prefers.
Have an exciting weekend!

After School Zone
After classes are done for the day, do you want an alternative place to go on the internet that doesn't only involve solitary games or music, or chat? Are you bored and haven't a clue as to what you should do next?
I used to be a latch - key kid back in the day. Most of my classmates went out and played, but I had to stay home and make my own fun. I learned a lot during that time period. Reading and television - watching, too, can be stimulating, but sometimes there are other things on the web to which you can pay your mind.
So, I created this place for you and others like you who want a "zone," or place that is fun and educational at the same time. If you need homework help, there might be something on here for you also.
So stay tuned, as I put on different items on here for you and your friends.
So, keep reading here every day, as I may post daily or even when I can.
Have a great time here!
~Ms. A!
A little about me:
I work in the field of education, have tutored kids and adults, and love to think of fun ways for kids, parents, and the community to learn.
I love to read, write, and go browsing, walking, and enjoying beautiful sites in Chicago and elsewhere.
More power to home-bound kids everwhere!!!
REMEMBER: This blog is going to be chock-full of activities that are fun for
both you and your family members. You should never
try activities without telling parents or other adults. That's what
communication is about! For example, don't go outside with-
out a parent or guardian, especially if you are a minor. (This is
true in school also, with permission slips and the like.)
For some activities, you may need your parents' permission to
participate. Wait until you talk to them or have them participate
as well.
Parents' Corner:
This area will be parents who stop by on this site.
The following information is for those of you who may
be thinking of after school programs for your child.
